The Renewal Initiative

The Renewal Initiative was developed to create awareness of, treatment of, and research into amyloidosis, a rare disease that occurs when abnormal proteins called amyloid build up in the body. Paul McComas, a Milwaukee-born writer/performer and the trustee of the Camille A. Lonstorf Charitable Trust, launched this initiative in 2014.  He continues to advocate for greater awareness in memory of his dear friend, Sheldon I. Miller, MD, a renowned mental health expert whose life was cut short by this disease, as well as in memory of the many others who have lived with the unrelenting challenges amyloidosis can create, and in honor of those facing these challenges today.  Funds raised support research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, led by Parameswaran Hari, MD, MRCP, the Armand Quick – William Stapp Professor of Hematology, and Director, Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and Anita D’Souza, MD, an assistant professor at MCW who is focusing on amyloidosis in her research and patient care.
